DHAKA, July 2, 2025 (BSS) - BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said a major change like the proportional representation (PR) election system must be passed through parliament before its application.

"No one can make this change except the parliament," he told reporters after a liaison committee meeting at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan political office here.

Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman Barrister Andalib Rahman Partha and BNP Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, among others, joined the meeting.

Khasru said, "When we came from the presidential system to the parliamentary system, all the parties had to reach a consensus and pass it in parliament".

"If any party has a desire for this system, I am asking them to come to parliament with that mandate from the people, respecting their opinion. For any fundamental change, we have to go to the people," he said.

Regarding the meeting of the liaison committee, Khasru said discussions were held on the elections.
