Five to walk gallows for killing youth in Shariatpur

DHAKA, July 3, 2025 (BSS) - A special court here today convicted and 
sentenced five people to death in a case lodged over beating a youth named 
Delwar Hossain Sardar to death in Palong area of Shariatpur in 2017.

The five death-row-convicts are-- Jewel Sardar, Rezaul Sardar, Aminul Sardar, 
Ismail Sardar and Salmun Sardar, prosecutor Gias Uddin told BSS.

Judge Halim Ullah Chowdhury of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 pronounced the 
judgment, also fined the convicts Taka one lakh each. The court also 
acquitted 12 of the charges.

According to the case documents, there was a longstanding enmity between two 
groups in the area. Delwar Hossain Sardar and his brother Dulal Sardar were 
returning home from Subochoni Bazar under Palong Model Police Station on July 
12, 2017, when the convicts stopped them. They dragged Delwar and Dulal from 
the rickshaw and beat them indiscriminately with hockey stick and hammer.

Delwar, who got seriously injured in the attack, was taken to Shariatpur 
Hospital, and from there he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College and 
Hospital (DMCH). 

Delwar was declared dead at the hospital.

His father A Salam Sardar filed the case with Palong Model Police Station. 
Police on December 10, 2018, filed a charge sheet against 18. 

The case was transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 for quick disposal. 
Meanwhile, as an accused died of natural cause, his name was dropped from the 
case. 

The court today came up with the judgment after examining 31 witnesses on 
different hearing dates.
