River Police nabs 337 individuals, seizes huge illegal nets in 7-day

DHAKA, July 3, 2025 (BSS) – The River Police in the nationwide operations apprehended 337 individuals and seized huge quantity of illegal nets, fish, fish fries in the last seven days.   

The River Police have been conducting the routine countrywide operations as part of the move to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways, said a press release of River Police.    

During the past seven days, a total of 4,65,03,940 meters of illegal fishing nets, 6,263 kg of fish, 20,000 pieces of shrimp and shrimp fry were seized and 336 bushes were destroyed from the river.

In this operation of the River Police, cases were filed against 94 bulkheads with the Naval Court and one dredger was seized due to non-availability of valid documents.

A total of eighty-six cases were filed against the detained 337 individuals.  Of the cases, 44 for fishing, two for stealing, one for extortion, seven for unnatural deaths, 25 for recklessness, two for sand extraction, three for murder, one for robbery and one under the Special Powers Act were filed.

The River Police in the last seven days recovered 15 bodies. 

The seized illegal fishing nets have been destroyed. The fish have been distributed to the orphanages and the fish fry have been released into the water.
