LAKSHMIPUR, July 3, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny today said that introducing proportional representation (PR) in the country would lead to a split among political parties.

"BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has already sharply criticized the PR system, saying that the system cannot be accepted in any way," Anny said.

He made the comments while attending a discussion at Dattapara Union of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila here.

"The PR system exists in various countries across the globe, especially in Europe," he said, adding that it is not practicable in the context of Bangladesh.

"If the PR system is introduced in the current context of Bangladesh, it will cause major divisions among us," he told the discussion.

"The fascists will gain mileage from the system," he said, adding that those who destroyed the country, its politics and social structure by taking the administration hostage should not be given any opportunity in any way.
