SHERPUR, July 5, 2025 (BSS) - A wild elephant, estimated to be around 15 to 20 years old, was found dead in Nalitabari upazila of the district early this morning, with officials suspecting electrocution as the cause of death.

According to the Forest Department, locals discovered the body of a male elephant in the Daodhara Katabari area of Nalitabari upazila around 5am.

Upon receiving the information, officials from the Forest Department and the Biodiversity and Conservation Department went to the spot. They suspect the elephant may have died after coming into contact with an electric source.

Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman also visited the site and said that an autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.

Locals and forest officials said residents in the region often install electric lights or wiring along fences to protect their homes and crops from wild elephant attacks.
