4 suspected extortionists held in Mirpur

DHAKA, July 7, 2025 (BSS) - Police has arrested four individuals for their suspected involvement in extortion from the capital's Mirpur area. 

The arrested have been identified as Anwar Hossain Tabid (35), Md. Mintu Mia (35), Md. Ratan Mia (34) and Md. Ismail Hossain (24).

They were arrested from a house called Pratik Villa in West Manipur around 3:00 am on Monday, said a police press release.

A gang of eight to 10 unidentified people, including the four arrestees, attacked the house in West Manipur around 10:00 pm on Sunday (July 6), it said.

The suspected criminals took the residents of the house hostage and demanded a ransom of Taka 20 lakh and the housemates had to pay them Taka 5 lakh through various ways, it added. 

Being informed police rushed to the place of occurrence and arrested four of the gang members from the scene and seized Taka 16000 from their possessions and seized a motorcycle used in the criminal acts. 

Other members of the gang managed to flee the scene.  

A regular case has been registered with Mirpur Model Police Station in this connection.
