KHULNA, July 8, 2025 (BSS) - Two students of Khulna University (KU) were released on bail Monday evening, more than five years after being detained during the Awami League regime on suspicion of terrorism.

They were released from Khulna Jail as the High Court granted their bail last week.

The students are Mohammad Anik, a student of the Human Resource and Management Discipline and Mozahidul Islam, a student of the Statistics Discipline at the university.

Court sources said they were picked up by members of law enforcement agencies on January 8, 2020, and allegedly kept at an unknown location. They were reportedly subjected to torture for 17 days.

Later, on January 25, police showed them arrested with explosives. On the same day, they were shown arrested in cases related to bomb attacks on the Khulna Krishak League office and the vehicle garage of Aronghata Police Station.

Police filed four more cases against them later, one after another. They had remained in jail since then.

Following the July Mass Uprising, their classmates, roommates, teachers, and family members held a press conference on the Khulna University campus demanding their release. Later, teachers and students also formed a human chain.

Akter Jahan Ruku, the students' lawyer, said that six cases were filed against them. Of these, they were acquitted in two cases, granted bail in another two and sentenced in two cases filed with Sonadanga Police Station.

Bail applications were submitted to the High Court for the two cases in which they were sentenced.

The court granted them bail last week. However, due to the Ashura holiday, the order reached the jail three days later, she added.
