Man held for blackmailing woman in city

DHAKA, July 8, 2025 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday arrested a person from the capital's Maligabh area for his alleged involvement in blackmailing a woman and extorting money from her by threatening to upload videos of their intimate scene on social media platforms. 

The arrested person has been identified as Md. Shoaib (41), son of Bashir Ahamad and Taqwa Begum, hailed from Manki Char (Mohabbat Ali Para) village, Shilkup Union, Banshkhali Police Station, Chattogram district.

A squad of the Cyber ??Police Center (CPC) of the CID arrested Md. Shoaib (41) after conducting a raid at 87, DIT Road, Malibagh area under Shahjahanpur Police Station in the capital on Monday, said a CID press release.

Initial investigation revealed that the accused met the victim through the social media platform TikTok. They later started chatting regularly on the IMO App. At one stage of the conversation, the accused screened and recorded and saved the intimate moments of the victim through a video call.

 Later, he developed physical relations with the victim multiple times by threatening to spread these videos on social media. At the same time, he blackmailed the victim and extorted Tk 8,00,000. 

As the victim refused to pay more money, the accused spread the victim's personal photos and videos on the IMO app. 

After the incident, the victim filed a case under Section 8(1)/8(2)/8(3) of the Control of Pornography Act, 2012 on June 23 last with Rampura Police Station.
