202 more held, 3.20 lakh meter illegal fishing nets seized in past week

DHAKA,July 10, 2025 (BSS) - The River Police in the ongoing nationwide operation, arrested 202 more crime suspects and seized around 3.20 crore meters of illegal fishing nets in the last seven days.

As part of the measures to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways, the River Police have been conducting a nationwide operation since the Interim Government assumed power.

In the past seven days, 202 individuals accused of 41 cases were arrested from across the country, said a press release of the River Police.

Of the cases, 18 cases of fishing, 8 cases of recklessness, two cases of drugs, six cases of unnatural death, three cases of sand extraction, one each case of murder, extortion, gambling and naval accident.

Eight bodies were also seized during the period.

A total of 3,19,81,890 meters of illegal fishing nets, 2,544 kg of fish, 30,000 pieces of Renu Pona (Fish fry), 9,000 pieces of Bagda Renu Pona were seized, and 578 bushes were destroyed from the river during the week-long operation.

In this operation of the River Police filed cases against 71 bulkheads in the Naval Court, and one dredger was seized due to having no valid documents.

The seized illegal nets have been destroyed, while the fish have been distributed to the orphanages, and the fish fry have been released into the water.
