DHAKA, July 11, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sent to jail economist and former chairman of the state-owned Janata Bank PLC, Professor Abul Barkat in a case lodged over embezzlement of Taka 297 crore from the bank by AnonTex Group.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order as police produced Barkat before the court and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of probe in the case.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday night arrested Prof Abul Barkat from the capital's Dhanmondi area.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on February 20, 2025 filed the case against 23 including Prof Abul Barkat and former governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB) Atiur Rahman over the embezzlement.
