River Police seizes huge illegal fishing nets, 257 held

DHAKA, Sept 4, 2025 (BSS) - The River Police in the nationwide ongoing operation to protect the country's fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways has seized a huge quantity of illegal fishing nets and held 257 crime suspects in the past week.
 
During the operation, over 2.66 crore meters of illegal fishing net, 2,360 kg of fish, 120 kg of jellied shrimp were seized and 228 bushes were destroyed from the river, said a press release.
 
They also arrested 257 accused in various cases in the past seven days. As many as 78 cases including 27 under Fisheries Act, 18 for Reckless Driving, three under Balumahal Act, 15 for Unintentional Death, three for theft, five under Narcotics Control Act, one under Marine Fisheries Act, one under Special Powers Act, one for robbery and three for murder were filed during the period.

A total of 21 bodies were recovered in the past week.

In this operation the River Police seized 94 bulkheads and six dredgers for having no legal document.

The seized illegal nets and jellied shrimp have been destroyed and the fishes distributed to orphanages.
