One to die, 17 get life-term for murdering youth in Rupganj

NARAYANGANJ, Sept 4, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today awarded capital punishment to a person and 17 others to life-term imprisonment for killing a young man at Rupganj upazila of the district.

The Judge of the First District and Sessions Judge Court of Narayanganj Md Mominul Islam pronounced the judgment in presence of a life-term convict and acquitted six accused as the allegations against them were not proved.

Court Inspector Abdul Quiyum said that the other accused have been absconding since long and two out of 26 accused have already died.

The capital punishment awarded persons were - Tawlad alias Zahirul (48), son of Afsar Uddin of Lolati area of Sonargaon upazila while the life term convicts are-Mizan, Mohammad Ali, Pondit, Abdul Latif, Hanif, Sohel, Sabuj, Milon, Selim, Golzar, Leda Faruk, Rasel, Momen, Saddam,Shaheen, Ruhul Amin and Abul. 

Those who were acquitted from the charge are - Abu, Masud, Mannan, Shahmim, Sohel and Delwar. Besides, Abul Hashem and Shawkot died during the trial of the case.

According to the case statement, one Nazrul Islam Babu was killed by a gang of miscreants led by terrorist VP Sohel on May 31 in 2012 as he organized the local people against drugs. The father of the victim filed a case against VP Sohel and his gang members and police later submitted charge sheet against 26 people for the killing.

Additional Public Prosecutor of the court advocate AKM Omar Faruk Nayon said that Nazrul Islam Babu was murdered mercilessly by the convicts as he protested against drug abuse in the area.
