Mirza Fakhrul, 76 others acquitted from SPA case

DHAKA, Sept 15, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today acquitted 77 people, including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a case filed with the capital's Shahbagh Police Station under the Special Powers Act (SPA).

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Judge Sabbir Faiz gave the acquittal order after accepting the final report submitted by the police.

Apart from Fakhrul, other notable accused in the case are BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikro, BNP Vice Chairman late Abdullah Al Noman,  Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary General Habib Un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Saiful Alam Nirab and Sultan Salah Uddin Mahmud Tuku.

According to the case details, on December 11 in 2019 miscreants set fire to a motorcycle in front of the main gate of the Bar Council under Shahbagh Police Station in the capital and caused damage.

 SI Shamsur Rahman filed a case under Sections 435/427/109/34 of the Penal Code and section 15 (1) of the Special Powers Act of 1974 for setting a motorcycle on fire to influence the verdict of the bail hearing in the Zia Charitable Trust case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and to put pressure on the judiciary the next day on December 12 in 2019.

 After investigating the case, on May 10 this year, the investigating officer of the case submitted a final report recommending acquittal of all 77 accused from the charges.  

 The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court has set September 15 as the date for receiving the final report.
