Cigarettes worth Tk 19 lakh seized at Ctg airport

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 16, 2025 (BSS) - Customs and intelligence officials seized 536 cartons of foreign cigarettes and eight smartphones from two passengers at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Thursday morning.

The seizure was made from the luggage of Dilip Das of Raozan upazila and Mohammad Selim of Fatikchhari upazila, who arrived on Salam Air flight OV401 from Muscat, Oman, at around 8:30 am.

Airport Public Relations Officer Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil confirmed the matter to BSS, saying that officials from Airport Customs, NSI, DGFI, and Customs Intelligence jointly conducted the search at the airport customs hall.

During the inspection, they recovered 536 cartons of cigarettes worth Tk 18.76 lakh and eight smartphones valued at Tk 4.40 lakh.

Of the seized items, Mohammad Selim was found in possession of 266 cartons of cigarettes and four Google Pixel smartphones, while Dilip Das had 270 cartons of cigarettes, two Google Pixel smartphones, and two Sony Xperia smartphones.

The seized items fall under import restrictions as per the Baggage Rules 2025.

As the passengers were identified as frequent flyers, they were detained for questioning and later released after receiving a verbal warning, the PRO added.
