NETROKONA, Oct 18, 2025 (BSS) - The family of Ramzan, a martyr of the July Uprising, has been handed over a newly constructed house at Nandipur village of Madanpur in Sadar upazila, in recognition of his ultimate sacrifice for the country.
On Saturday afternoon, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdullah Al Mahmud Zaman officially handed over the keys of the new home to Ramzan’s parents, under the initiative of the Sadar Upazila administration.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner spoke with the family members, paid respects at Ramzan’s grave, and offered prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asma Binte Rafiq was also present on the occasion.
Ramzan’s father, Liton Mia, emotionally told BSS, “My son sacrificed his life for the country. He went to Dhaka to earn a living and dreamt of building our home. Today, we received that house—but we will never get our son back. I pray that the noble cause for which he gave his life is fulfilled, and Bangladesh becomes a just and beautiful nation.”
Ramzan, the eldest of three siblings, was compelled to shoulder his family’s responsibilities after completing his SSC. Employed as a salesman with Akij Group, Ramzan shared a rented room with relatives in Rampura and regularly sent money back to support his farmer father, mother, and younger siblings.
Despite advising his younger brother to stay home during the July protests, Ramzan himself joined a student procession in Rampura on July 19, demanding a discrimination-free Bangladesh. The protest turned deadly when police opened fire on demonstrators along Wapda Road.
Ramzan was shot just below the throat, the bullet piercing his lungs. He collapsed on the street, gravely wounded.
Bystanders rushed him to Better Life Hospital, where initial treatment was reportedly denied until fellow protestors began recording videos. He was eventually referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
Ramzan’s body was returned to his ancestral village that same day. He was buried in the courtyard of his family home, beneath a coconut tree beside a lush green paddy field.
The newly built house now stands in front of a crop field, serving as both a shelter and a symbol of remembrance for the young man who laid down his life for a greater cause.
