DHAKA, Oct 20, 2025 (BSS) – Mohammadpur police under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested a fraudster, Md Rajib Khan alias Ishan, on charges of deceiving a young woman into marriage and swindling Tk 10.50 lakh from her in the Mirpur area.

A police team conducted a raid in the Mirpur-10 Metrorail Station area around 1:30 pm yesterday and arrested him. Police also seized a mobile phone used in the fraudulent activities.

According to a press release issued by the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division today, the victim, Sumaiya Sultana, met Ishan, a Greece expatriate, through Facebook about two years ago and developed a relationship with him.

Later, Ishan proposed marriage to Sumaiya and also contacted her parents and relatives. He promised to send Sumaiya’s younger brother and brother-in-law to Greece at his own expense, the release said.

Trusting his promise, Sumaiya arranged the necessary passport work. Ishan received Tk 1.5 lakh through a banking app and Tk 4 lakh via bKash for arranging the trip abroad, according to case details.

Ishan returned to Bangladesh on October 6 and demanded more money to send Sumaiya’s brother abroad. On October 8, around 12 noon, he met Sumaiya at the Shyamoli Square Shopping Mall under Mohammadpur Police Station and took Tk 5 lakh in cash. Since then, Ishan cut off all communication with her.

Realizing she had been deceived, Sumaiya filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station on October 17, accusing Ishan of cheating and embezzling a total of Tk 10.50 lakh.

Based on intelligence and technological tracking, Mohammadpur police identified his location and arrested him.

Legal action is underway against him.
