River Police arrests three, seizes illegal nets, boats with hilsa

DHAKA, Oct 21, 2025 (BSS)- River Police arrested three fishermen and seized illegal net, hilsa fish and boats from different points of Meghna River in Hizla upazila of Barishal district. 

On the occasion of the Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2025 announced by the government, a special team of the River Police Headquarters and the Barisal Region jointly conducted a day-long drive at various points in the Meghna River in Hijla Upazila, said a press release here today.

It said that 825,000 meters of illegal nets, 180 kg of hilsa fish and seven boats were seized in the operation. 

In addition, 23 mobile courts were conducted and three men were arrested. The nets seized in the operation were destroyed and the fish were distributed among the local poor, helpless and orphanages.

It said that during the operation, Hijla, Kaliganj and other temporary River police continued their ongoing operations vigorously. 

As part of the operational work, surveillance was carried out at various places in the Meghna River using drone technology to prevent the fishing of mother hilsa during the prohibited period. The River Police also distributed leaflets and conducted public awareness campaigns.

The campaign began on October 4th and will continue until tomorrow.
