KHULNA, Nov 19, 2025 (BSS) - Emphasizing the importance of homegrown technological solutions, Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council (BEPRC) Chairman Mohammad Wahid Hossain today said research-based innovation is essential to advancing the country's electricity and energy sector and reducing dependence on imported energy.

He made the remarks while delivering the keynote speech at a symposium titled "Technological Challenges and Possible Solutions for Electricity and Energy in Bangladesh," jointly organized by BEPRC and Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) at the university auditorium this afternoon.

The BEPRC chairman, also a senior secretary, highlighted that major achievements often start with small innovations. "We should embrace research as a profession. One day, a breakthrough in technology will emerge from our own efforts, transforming the country and possibly the world," he said.

He added that BEPRC is working to improve research facilities and urged business communities to prioritize the development and marketing of locally innovated products instead of relying on imports.

Speaking as a special guest, BEPRC Member (Additional Secretary) Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam warned about the country's growing dependence on imported technology.

"Currently, technological products and services account for about 25 percent of Bangladesh's total imports. If local innovation does not advance, this reliance could rise to 90 percent in the future," he cautioned.

The symposium was presided over by JUST Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid.

Faculty of Engineering and Technology Dean Md. Amzad Hossain, BEPRC Director Hasan Mahmud, JUST Associate Professor Dr. Md. Aminul Islam, and Assistant Professor Dr. Md. Biplob Hossain addressed the event, among others.
