2 killed, over 150 injured as 5.7 earthquake jolts Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Nov 21, 2025 (BSS) - A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Narsingdi this morning, killing two people and injuring over 150 others, including three in critical condition.
 
The deceased were identified as Kazem Ali, 75, of Malita Paschimpara village in Palash upazila, and Omar, 10, son of Delwar Hossain of Chinishpur union under Narsingdi Sadar upazila. Kazem died after the wall of his mud house collapsed during the tremor, his cousin Awal Miah said.
 
According to the emergency department of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, more than 150 people across the district received primary treatment for quake-related injuries. The identities of the injured could not be confirmed immediately.
 
The earthquake sparked panic across the district and caused damage in almost all upazilas. 

Several buildings in Narsingdi town developed cracks and partially tilted. Numerous structures in Palash, Shibpur, Raipura, Monohardi, Belabo and Madhabdi upazilas also sustained cracks. 

In Ghorashal municipality's New Bazar area of Palash upazila, the house of Ishaq Mia collapsed, causing significant damage.
 
Meanwhile, the quake caused major damage to the Ghorashal Thermal Power Station. A fire broke out at the station's substation at 10:38 am, damaging key components of the national grid and disrupting power supply.
 
Md Abdul Shahid, senior station officer of Palash Fire Service, said two units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control quickly.
 
Engineer Md Enamul Haque, chief engineer of the Ghorashal Thermal Power Station, said the fire was triggered by the earthquake and that efforts are underway to restore normal electricity supply.
 
The 5.7-magnitude earthquake was also felt in Dhaka and several other parts of the country at 10:38 am. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the epicentre was located in Madhabdi of Narsingdi, about 13km east of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.
