Chattogram seen as strategic economic hub by Wuhu City Mayor

CHITTAGONG, Nov 25, 2025 (BSS) - Xu Zhi, Mayor of Wuhu City in China's Anhui province, has branded Chattogram as a strategic economic hub of Bangladesh with strong potential for industrial growth and foreign investment.

During a discussion held at the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) office today, he said Wuhu is among the top 40 fastest-growing and industrialised cities in China, boasting robust high-tech, automobile, construction, shipbuilding and heavy industry sectors.

"We have rich experience in automobile, shipbuilding, port technology and heavy industry. We see Chattogram as a strategic economic hub of Bangladesh," he said.

Xu Zhi noted significant investment opportunities in Chattogram, particularly in shipbuilding, port expansion, manufacturing-oriented industries and environmentally friendly automobile factories. He added that companies from Wuhu City are showing strong interest in investing in these sectors.

Highlighting Wuhu's global industrial presence, the mayor said the city is home to BYD and several other world-class companies seeking long-term overseas investment. Considering Chattogram Port's strategic location and the availability of skilled human resources, he said there are real prospects for joint ventures involving automobile assembly plants, research and technology collaboration and smart logistics infrastructure.

Mayor Xu Zhi was accompanied by Zhou Hao, Director of the Administrative Committee of Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone, Liu Xingrong, Director of Wuhu Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, Cao Jie, Director of the Science and Technology Bureau, Zhou Wei, Director of the Industry and Information Technology Bureau, Dong Liang, Deputy Director of the Development and Reform Commission and Xu Hui, Vice President of Cherry Holding Group Company Limited, among others.
