River Police seize huge illegal fishing nets, nab 357 persons

DHAKA, Dec 4, 2025 (BSS)- In a series of nationwide operations over the past one week, the River Police have recovered a massive quantity of illegal fishing nets and arrested 357 individuals on various offenses.

The operations were carried out as part of the force’s ongoing efforts to protect the country's fishery resources and ensure safety across waterways.

According to official sources, the River Police confiscated around 3.08 crore meters illegal nets, 5,966 kilograms of fish, 50,000 pieces of Bagda shrimp fry, and 260 kilograms of jellied shrimps. 

Additionally, 134 illegal fish-enclosure were removed from the river during the crackdown.

Authorities filed cases against 87 bulkheads for failing to produce valid documents, while six dredgers were seized for operating illegally.

A total of 89 cases were lodged in connection with the operations, including 62 under the Fisheries Act and 19 under the Reckless Speed Act and six others in other charges.

Officials also reported the recovery of three dead bodies during the operations.

The River Police stated that all seized illegal nets and jellied shrimp were destroyed. 

The confiscated fish were distributed to orphanages, and the shrimp fries were released in the water.
