Government commits to achieve SDGs: Dr Manzur

KHULNA, Dec 3, 2025 (BSS) -Member (Secretary) of the General Economics Division (GED) of the Bangladesh Planning Commission, Dr Manzur Hossain, said today that the government remains committed to achieving the SDGs, adding that five upazilas have been selected as model areas for implementation.

"A village in Dumuria upazila of Khulna, affected by water logging and salinity, will be chosen as a pilot SDG Village," he said as the chief guest at a consultation meeting on selecting an SDG Village under the project titled "Redefining Economic Strategies for Sustainable Development in Bangladesh," held this afternoon at the conference room of the Khulna Deputy Commissioner.

Dr Hossain said sustainable development would be easier to achieve if government services and activities are implemented properly.

Identifying priority areas and ensuring development from the grassroots are essential for attaining sustainable development, he added.

Deputy Commissioner A S M Jashim Uddin Khandaker presided over the meeting. Divisional Commissioner Md Mokhter Ahmed addressed the programme as special guest while Suman Das, Senior Assistant Chief of GED presented a key note paper.

Among others, GED Joint Chiefs Dr S M Zobaidul Kabir and Md Siddiqur Rahman, Deputy Chief Md Jubair, Khulna Local Government Deputy Director Md Ariful Islam, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Parishad Taslima Akter, officials of various government departments, UNOs and NGO representatives attended the meeting.

The project aims to identify priority sectors for establishing a foundation for sustainable economic development, redefine development strategies and prepare short-term action plans to accelerate SDG implementation.
