DINAJPUR, Jan 11, 2026 (BSS) - After a long 30 years, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has given a candidate for Dinajpur-6 constituency in the upcoming general elections.

BNP's candidate Dr AZM Zahid Hossain has been welcomed with great enthusiasm by leaders, activists, supporters and voters in the country's largest parliamentary constituency of Dinajpur-6 consisting of four upazilas - Birampur, Nawabganj, Hakimpur and Ghoraghat.

SM Shamim Hossain Chowdhury, president of Ghorahat Upazila BNP, said during the mass campaign, Dr Zahid has mixed with people of all classes and professions in the area.

“Whenever he finds a sick patient present, he provides immediate medical care to him or her. In this way, he is holding courtesy meetings, religious observances and introduction sessions with people of all classes,” he said.

Chowdhury said ending a long wait of 30 years, the BNP has announced a single candidate for Dinajpur-6 constituency.

Since the nomination of Dr Zahid Hossain, a member of BNP standing committee, was declared valid as the candidate for the paddy sheaf, people from all walks of life and BNP men in the area have been exchanging views with him at social events.

On Sunday evening, Dr Zahid informed that since he was declared the BNP candidate for this constituency, there has been a lot of enthusiasm among the BNP leaders and activists of this constituency.

After a long time, BNP men have become optimistic about getting a single candidate for their party. The BNP men believe that through united efforts, it will be possible to snatch the victory of the BNP’s symbol - the sheaf of paddy - in this constituency.

BNP leaders and activists and general voters expected that if elected, Dr Zahid pledged to work for the overall development of the area, including education, health, and housing and employment generation.

Since the country’s independence, several candidates from NAP, independent candidates, Jamaat-e-Islami and Awami League have been elected members of parliament from this constituency. Due to alliance politics, BNP could not field a single candidate here in the past few elections. As a result, this is the first time after over 30 years, BNP is going to participate in the upcoming general elections with its single candidate.

With the candidacy of an influential and experienced leader like Dr Zahid Hossain, local voters are seeing a new ray of hope for the socioeconomic development of this region.

The BNP is determined to create new political history by winning the Dinajpur-6 constituency, local BNP leaders said.

BNP has never won this constituency due to alliances except in the February 1996 elections. In that election, Principal Atiur Rahman was elected as MP for a short time as the sole candidate nominated by BNP.
