CHATTOGRAM, Jan 27, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram District Police today submitted an investigation report to a court accusing 26 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League (AL) and its affiliated bodies in connection with an attack on the convoy of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in Rangunia upazila.

The report was placed before the Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Court, following earlier court directives to expedite the probe.

According to case documents, the incident occurred on June 18, 2017, when a BNP delegation led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was traveling to Rangamati via Rangunia to inspect areas affected by a landslide that claimed at least 115 lives.

The convoy was reportedly attacked in the Ichakhali area of Rangunia, with assailants allegedly wielding sharp weapons.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Chattogram divisional organising secretary Mahbuber Rahman and several others were injured in the attack.

Following the incident, the delegation abandoned its trip to Rangamati and returned to Chattogram city. Later, BNP leaders held a press conference at the Chattogram Press Club, alleging that former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, a former MP from the area, had orchestrated the assault.

Initially, the police submitted a report confirming the incident but without naming any suspects. Dissatisfied, the plaintiff filed a revision petition in September 2024, prompting the court to order a fresh investigation. The latest probe report has now named 26 accused in the case.
