CUMILLA, Feb 11, 2026 (BSS) - A massive surge of homebound voters has created heavy traffic on the Cumilla stretch of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway ahead of the 13th National Parliament election scheduled for Thursday, February 12.

Thousands of people are returning to their villages from the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram to cast their votes, generating a festive atmosphere across Cumilla district. The increased travel has put significant pressure on highways, bus terminals and regional roads.

Since Tuesday afternoon, large crowds have been observed at key points including Paduar Bazar, Alekharchar Bishwa Road, Cumilla Cantonment, Daudkandi and Chauddagram. Passengers were seen waiting in long queues for buses, many of which were carrying more than their designated capacity.

Transport officials said most advance tickets for routes connecting Cumilla and destinations such as Chandpur, Noakhali, Lakshmipur and Feni have already been sold. They expect passenger numbers to rise further on the eve of the election.

“I am getting the opportunity to cast my vote myself after a long time. Even though it is a little difficult, I am going home to my village with my family. This difficulty is part of the joy,” said Abdul Malek, a passenger waiting at Alekharchar Bishwa Road.

Rashed Mahmud, an employee of a private organization, said he had taken two extra days of leave to participate in the election. “Even during Eid, I feel the same urge to go back to my village,” he added.

In addition to buses, the number of CNG-run auto-rickshaws and private vehicles on the road has increased noticeably. Traffic congestion was reported on regional roads linking Cumilla with Chandpur, Noakhali and Lakshmipur, causing slow movement in several areas.

Bus drivers said they have been making continuous trips since morning to accommodate the rush. “Such pressure is usually seen during Eid,” said driver Nazrul Islam. Another driver, Sohel Rana, said a visible excitement among passengers, with many discussing their preferred candidates and the voting process.

Law enforcement agencies have stepped up security measures at bus terminals and key highway points to ensure passenger safety. Police and highway police patrols were visible across the district. Transport owners and workers have also been instructed to remain vigilant to facilitate smooth travel.

Voting will be held simultaneously across the country on Thursday. The strong turnout of homebound voters underscores widespread public interest in what many describe as a crucial opportunity to shape the nation’s future.
