DHAKA, March 12, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued special traffic control measures to ensure safe and smooth travel during the upcoming Eid ul Fitr.

According to Acting DMP Commissioner Md. Sarwar, over 1.5 crore people typically leave Dhaka during Eid, while about 40 lakh enter the capital. To manage this massive movement, the DMP has released guidelines for transport owners, drivers, passengers and city residents.

To reduce highway congestion, trucks, lorries, and covered vans will be restricted from 17 March to 23 March 2026. Exceptions will be made for vehicles carrying essential food items, perishable goods, garments, medicines, fertilizers and fuel.

City residents are requested to avoid several major roads unless necessary to facilitate Eid-bound traffic. Roads to avoid from 16 March include Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway (Kuril to Abdullahpur), Dhaka-Chittagong Highway (Gulistan to Signboard), Dhaka-Aricha Highway / Mirpur Road (Arang Crossing to Aminbazar), Dhaka-Keraniganj Road (Phulbaria-Tatibazar-Babubazar Bridge), Dhaka-Mawa Highway (Gulistan to Buriganga Bridge), Mohammadpur Basila Crossing to Basila Bridge Road, Abdullahpur to Dhow Bridge Road, and Fulbaria to Sadarghat Launch Terminal Road.

The DMP has also issued guidelines for bus owners and drivers. Inter-district buses must pick up passengers only from designated terminals and roadside boarding or dropping is strictly prohibited. Buses must follow scheduled departure times and approved fares. Drivers should avoid reckless driving, speeding and overtaking on narrow bridges or bends. Driving under the influence, while drowsy or using mobile phones/headphones is prohibited. Drivers must carry valid licences and vehicle documents and cannot drive more than five hours continuously or eight hours a day. Unfit or smoke-emitting vehicles are banned from the roads.

Passengers are advised to board buses only from terminals or counters and avoid accepting food or drinks from strangers. They should keep personal belongings safe, arrive at terminals on time and use foot overbridges, underpasses, or zebra crossings when crossing roads. Travelling in goods-carrying vehicles or boarding moving buses is strongly discouraged.

In case of emergencies, citizens can contact the nearest police control room or dial 999. The DMP has urged all residents, drivers and transport operators to cooperate to maintain traffic discipline and ensure a smooth Eid journey for everyone.
