JS adopts obituary reference on ex-PM Khaleda Zia, other distinguished personalities

SANGSAD BHABAN, Mar 12, 2026 (BSS) - The 13thJatiyaSangsad at its first session today unanimously adopted a condolence motion expressing profound grief over the death of former three times Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

The first female prime minister of the country died on December 30, 2025, at the age of 80 at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka due to a prolonged illness, including advanced liver cirrhosis, heart, and lung complications.

The House also adopted the condolence motion at the death of former Indian Prime Minister and Congress leader Monmohon Singh, 86-year old supreme leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed moved the condolence motion at the outset of the first session of the 13th parliament held at the JatiyaSangsad Bhaban here.

The parliament also adopted condolence motion due to death of a former President of the people’s republic of Bangladesh and other 31 former lawmakers.

The deceased includes former President and Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh’s former President Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, former BNP lawmaker Farhad Ahmed Chowdhury, former workers party lawmaker Shahidullah Shahid, former BNP lawmaker Advocate Nadim Mostafa, former lawmaker of reserved women seat Professor LutfunNesa Hosain, lawmakers M Mahbubur Raman, Mostafizur Rahman, deputy leader of the parliament and former lawmaker Matia Chowdhury, Shahiduzzaman Beltu, Rozi Kabir, SM Akram, S A Khaleque, Major General KM Shafiullah, Abdul Momin Talukder, Abdullah Al Noman, Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Colonel M Anwarul Azim, Mostafa Mohsin Montu, Mohammad Abdul Mannan Talukder, Iftekhar Uddin Talukder Pintu, Mohammad Hafez Ruhul Amin Madani, Borhan Uddin, Mohammad Matiar Rahman Talukder, Nur Afroz Ali, Abdul Karim Khandoker, Sukumar Ranjan Gosh, Major General (retd) Mahmudul Hasan, Ramesh Chandra Sen, Abdul Mannan Khan, Mia Abdullah Wazed, Mohammad Zoaherul Islam, 

The parliament also expressed condolence over the death of senior system analyst Nusrat Sharmin Mouri, deputy director Mohammad Hasan, assistant director Mahruha Begum and office assistant M Abdul Latif of the parliament secretariat.

Besides, condolence was poured at the Jatiya Sangsad over the death of Chess Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, singer Shafin Ahmed, footballer Zakaria Pintu, lyricist Professor Abu Zafar, interim government adviser AF Hasan Arif, film actor Probir Mitra, economist Professor Anisur Rahman, former secretary Inam Ahmed Chowdhry, folklore singer Protul Mukerjee, BNP chairperson’s adviser Shahhida Rafique, former caretaker government adviser Syed Monjur Elahi, Ekushey Padak recipient Susma Das, lawyer Barrister Abdur Razzaque, sculpture and artist Hamiduzzaman Khan, singer Hasan Abidur Reza Juwel, nuclear scientist Professor M Shamser Ali, academician Jhotin Sarker, Lalon singer Farida Parvin, language veteran Ahmed Rafique, researcher Professor Tofail Ahmed, former election commissioner Justice Abdur Rauf, academician Syed Manjurul Islam, former principal secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui, former caretaker government adviser M Hafiz Uddin Khan, social worker Kaniz Fatema, Hurun Nahar Rashid, mother of civil aviation and tourism minister Afroza Khanam, Ekushey Padak recipient poet Jahanar Arzoo and noted journalist Mark Tally.

The Jatiya Sangsad expressed condolence on the fatalities, who were killed in the training aircraft crash of Bangladesh Air Force at Uttara Milestone School and College.

Moreover, the house also expressed deep shock and prayed eternal peace to the almighty for those who had been lost their lives due to accident at different places in home and abroad.

Later, the obituary motion was unanimously adopted by the House, prayed for eternal peace of those deceased and observed one-minute silence and munajat as mark of respect to the departed souls.

Treasury Bench lawmaker and Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad conducted the munajat.

Earlier, a long discussion was held recalling the memory of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and the martyrs of July uprising.

The lawmakers including LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, lawmaker from Bhola-1 Anadaleev Rahman Partho, opposition Jamaat-e Islami lawmaker ATM Azharul Islam also participated in the discussion.
