DHAKA, May 10, 2026 (BSS) - Five members of a family, including a woman and three children, sustained severe burn injuries in a gas stove fire broke out at a house in the Giridhara area of Fatullah in Narayanganj this morning.

The injured are vegetable vendor Mohammad Abul Kalam, 47, who sustained 95 percent burns; his wife Salma Begum, 35, with 60 percent burns; son Munna, 12, with 30 percent burns; and daughters Munni, 7, with 35 percent burns and Kotha, 8, with 52 percent burns.

The incident occurred around 6:45am when a sudden fire erupted in the kitchen while the stove was being lit, police and local sources said.

Neighbours rescued the victims and rushed them to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) around 7:45am.

According to neighbours, the family lived on the ground floor of a nine-storey building in Fatullah.

Preliminary suspicion suggests that accumulated gas from a leakage triggered the blaze.

NIBPS resident physician Dr Shawon Bin Rahman said all five victims sustained 30 to 95 percent burns and are in critical condition.
