KHULNA, May 10, 2026 (BSS) – Khulna is set to witness a new dimension in its urban road infrastructure with the construction of the city’s first-ever flyover under the ambitious Three-Link Road Project.

The Tk 715 crore projects, now around 70 to 75 percent complete is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the metropolis.

Officials hope the initiative will significantly reduce travel time and pressure on the city’s busiest roads once completed.

The project includes a nearly three-kilometre four-lane road stretching from Nirala Residential Area to the City Bypass, featuring a visually striking flyover at its midpoint.

Construction of the overpass and adjoining road sections has already become clearly visible, with piling, concrete casting and connecting structures progressing rapidly.

The flyover project, being implemented by Khulna Development Authority (KDA) under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, is scheduled for completion by December this year.

Project officials said the main section of the new road and flyover has achieved nearly 75 percent progress. The flyover component alone is about 70 to 80 percent complete.

The wider project also includes expansion and development of roads from Khulna University to Rayermohol and from Bastuhara Point to the old Satkhira intersection.

According to project sources, the second component involves construction of a nearly five-kilometre two-lane road from Khulna University area to Rayermohol, where around 40 percent of work has been completed.
The third component, a nearly three-kilometre road from Bastuhara area to old Satkhira Road, has seen about 60 percent completions.

Officials concerned said the project, launched in July 2018, will create alternative entry and exit routes for the city after the three link roads become operational.

Heavy vehicles, which currently contribute to severe congestion on the main city roads, will be able to directly use the City Bypass, reducing pressure on internal roads.

Local residents and business people believe the new roads will boost housing and commercial activities in Nirala, Rayermohol and nearby areas.

Land prices in several localities have already increased in anticipation of improved connectivity, they said.

Truck driver Monsur Haidar said he regularly faces traffic congestion while entering or leaving the city through Gollamari area.

“The new road has progressed significantly. Once opened, traffic pressure on the Gollamari Bank official SouravMajumdar, a resident of Nirala, said he commuters daily by motorcycle to Fakirhat in Bagerhat for work.

“I lose nearly an hour daily due to congestion through Gollamari. Although the road is not fully complete, I have already started using parts of it.

Once fully opened, many commuters like me will benefit and save valuable working hours,” he added.

However, urban planners have raised concerns over aspects of the project design. They argued that the flyover does not provide provisions for traffic movement underneath, which may create future traffic management complications.

Secretary of the Khulna chapter of the Bangladesh Institute of Planners Asif Ahmed said the Nirala intersection would continue to experience congestion unless it is widened and partially redesigned.
“In large infrastructure projects, even minor design limitations can create major long-term problems,” he observed.

General Secretary of the Khulna metropolitan unit of Nirapad  Sarak Chai MahbuburRahmanMunna also pointed to certain design shortcomings.

He said the road could have been made wider and the link roads extended further to provide greater convenience for city residents, especially considering that parts of the road pass through residential areas.

Executive Engineer of Khulna Development Authority and Project Director Mortoza Al Mamun told BSS that despite some delays, the authorities are trying to complete the entire project within the revised deadline of December 2026 without increasing the allocated budget.

“We are making efforts to complete the work within the approved budget despite design adjustments and time extensions,” he added.
