DHAKA, June 4, 2026 (BSS) - Aedes mosquito density has been found above the acceptable threshold in 63 out of 75 wards under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), with 27 wards identified as highly vulnerable to dengue transmission.

DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam disclosed this today while addressing a programme titled "Publication of Pre-Monsoon Aedes Larvae Survey Results and Presentation of Action Plan" held at the Nagar Bhaban auditorium.

The survey was conducted from May 12 to May 23 under the management of the DSCC with support from the Communicable Disease Control (CDC) wing of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

A total of 36 personnel from the DSCC and the DGHS participated in the survey. Using modern Kobo Toolbox technology, data were collected from 2,250 households.

The survey detected Aedes mosquito larvae and pupae in 281 of the inspected houses. Among the premises where larvae were detected, the highest proportion was found in multi-storey buildings at 35.23 percent, followed by single-family houses at 27.76 percent, under-construction buildings at 17.44 percent and semi-permanent houses at 14.59 percent.

The findings also showed that 12.26 percent of larvae were detected in stagnant water accumulated on floors, 10.34 percent in buckets and 8.89 percent in plastic drums, identifying these as major breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

Based on the survey results, the DSCC administrator announced that a five-day special "crash programme" will be launched from June 7 in the 27 high-risk wards.

The programme, to be implemented jointly by the health and waste management departments, will include mosquito control operations, cleanliness drives and public awareness activities.

A similar programme will be carried out in the following week in 36 wards identified as having a moderate level of risk.

To raise public awareness about dengue and chikungunya prevention, an awareness rally will be held on June 6 from Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi. Similar programmes will gradually be organized in other parts of the capital.

Speaking at the event, Md Abdus Salam urged public participation to eliminate the risk. "People must keep their homes and workplaces clean and develop the habit of removing stagnant water every three days," he said.
