DHAKA, June 27, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed three new rice varieties-BRRI-116, BRRI-117 and BRRI Hybrid-10-marking a significant advancement in rice research in the country.

Under the project 'Locality-based rice variety and technology innovation and existing laboratory development (LSTD),' BRRI has already developed and released three new varieties, which are expected to play a significant role in increasing rice production.

The new varieties are suitable for cultivation in, particularly, the saline and waterlogged areas of the country's southwestern region.

The information was disclosed at a workshop titled "Project Implementation Progress 2025-26 and Work Plan 2026-27," held today at the BRRI auditorium in Gazipur.

Speaking as the chief guest, Secretary (Routine Charge) of the Ministry of Agriculture Dr Rashida Ferdous said the expansion of research-based technologies developed under the LSTD project at the field level would increase rice productivity and farmers' profitability.

BRRI Director General (Routine Charge) Afsari Khanam presided over the workshop.

She said the project had already achieved notable success in environment-specific research, conservation of local germplasm and dissemination of modern technologies. She stressed the importance of successfully implementing the project's objectives within the stipulated timeframe.

LSTD Project Director Dr Md Anwar Hossain presented the project's implementation progress and the work plan for the coming year.

"Three new rice varieties would play an important role in increasing rice production in the saline and waterlogged lands of the country's southwestern region," he said.
