DHAKA, July 13, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam today visited the Dhaka University (DU) campus at the request of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and assured the students of a permanent and sustainable solution to the persistent waterlogging problem.

The administrator visited the Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall areas, following a formal demand raised by the JCD DU unit in light of severe waterlogging caused by recent heavy rain.

During the visit, the student leaders and general students handed over a memorandum to the administrator, outlining a series of demands to resolve waterlogging across the entire university campus.

Responding to the demands, the DSCC administrator said the government has already approved a mega project to permanently resolve the waterlogging issue in the Nilkhet, New Market and Shahnewaz Hall areas.

While the full implementation of the project may take one to two years, he noted that the university community will start reaping the benefits from the very next monsoon season.

He also announced several immediate and long-term measures to improve student welfare, promising that two fogger machines would be provided immediately to the two residential halls alongside regular cleanliness drives to curb mosquito-borne diseases. Furthermore, in the event of future heavy rainfall, emergency pumping systems will be deployed for instant water drainage.

He added that feasibility studies will be conducted to set up a dedicated water pumping station and a sub-power station near the halls, while effective measures will simultaneously be taken to mitigate traffic congestion from the front of the halls.

The DSCC Administrator also urged the students to maintain cleanliness within their premises to prevent artificial waterlogging and protect themselves from waterborne diseases.

Among others, JCD DU president Ganesh Chandra Roy Shahos and general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon were present during the visit.
