NARSINGDI, June 24, 2026 (BSS) - What began as a hobby with just five Silkie chickens has turned into a thriving poultry enterprise for Md Mobarak Hossain, a school teacher from Shrirampur under Raipura upazila of the district.
Over the past four years, Mobarak, 31, has developed Molla Agro Farm on a previously unused low-lying plot behind his residence. The farm now houses around 400 birds of 22 local and exotic breeds, including White, Black Tail, Mottled, Golden Sebright, Silver Sebright, White Frizzle Police Cap, and indigenous hill varieties. It also features a special breed of quail weighing around 500 grams.
Alongside poultry rearing, he produces chicks through artificial incubation and markets ornamental birds through both online and offline platforms. The venture currently earns him between Tk 40,000 and Tk 50,000 per month.
Speaking to BSS, Mobarak said he started the farm by saving small amounts of money and purchasing five Silkie chickens for Tk 2,500.
"Now I operate two farms with around 400 birds from 22 local and foreign breeds. Exotic poultry farming has significant potential and can create employment opportunities for many unemployed youths," he said.
Mobarak said many young people regularly visit his farm to learn about poultry management and explore business opportunities in the sector. He advised aspiring entrepreneurs to acquire proper training and technical knowledge before starting such ventures.
Locals said the farm has become a popular attraction in the area, while many visitors have expressed interest in establishing similar farms after observing its operations.
Local resident Ripon Mia, 32, said he was impressed to see so many exotic poultry breeds in one place and described Mobarak Hossain as a successful entrepreneur whose achievement had inspired him to consider establishing a similar farm.
Another visitor, Junaid Hossain, 25, said a tour of the farm had encouraged him to explore poultry farming and seek guidance from Mobarak before starting his own venture.
Raipura Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Mohammad Kamruzzaman said Mobarak's success has encouraged others to take an interest in poultry farming.
"He is earning a profit by marketing exotic birds both online and offline. Such initiatives can help create self-employment and contribute to reducing unemployment," he said.
The livestock department is providing technical advice, deworming support and vaccination services to ensure healthy rearing of the birds, he added.
