Govt takes Tk48cr project to enhance Dharmasagar dighi's beauty

DHAKA, Aug 19, 2025 (BSS) - The government has taken a Taka 48 crore project to further enhance the beauty of Dharmasagar dighi, a symbol of history, tradition, culture and social gathering of the ancient city Cumilla.

Under the project, beautification works including increasing banks around the dighi, building banks, creating a modern walkway for walking, beautification of the river and construction of a small hanging bridge in the northeast corner will be done. 

Talking to BSS, Executive Engineer of the Cumilla City Corporation Md Abu Sayem Bhuiyan said the tender process for this project has been completed and hoped that the work will start next month.

"Dharmasagar is the heart of Cumilla. The City Corporation will take all possible initiatives to preserve its beauty and ideals," he added.

Dharmasagar was dug by the Tripura king Dharma Manikya in 1458. Sachin Dev Burman and Kazi Nazrul Islam were here during their time in Cumilla. There is a memorial center of Nazrul beside the dighi.

To facilitate the local habitat with mineral water 'Dharmasagar' was established, which is considered one of the earliest evidence of urban water heritage of Bangladesh. 

Since the establishment, this water body has been the centre of the social and economic growth of the city.
