DINAJPUR, Jan 30, 2025 (BSS)- Tulips, typically grown in colder climates, have blossomed for the first time in the district, thanks to the efforts of young entrepreneur Hasinur Rahman.
The colorful flowers are being successfully cultivated in Bochaganj upazila, where yellow tulips are blooming in the garden of Hasinur Rahman Chowdhury, 35, creating enthusiasm among other people on planting the flowers on their land.
Hasinur said people from various places have been visiting his garden to witness the beauty of tulips that bloomed for the first time in the district, opening new possibilities for the region's flower economy.
A few farmers in Dinajpur cultivate marigolds and roses-especially in the Nashipur area, but tulips had never been grown before.
Hasinur, a resident of Ward No. 8 in Atgaon Union, planted five varieties of tulip seedlings on his land in Bandhugaon this year. Of those, yellow tulips have already blossomed, creating a panoramic scenario there.
Flower lovers in the locality will be able to purchase locally grown tulips ahead of the Spring Festival and Valentine's Day, he hoped.
While expressing his aspiration on Wednesday afternoon, Hasinur said, "My nephew, Tasikul Alam Tapu, who works for a pharmaceutical company in Panchagarh, encouraged me after seeing tulip cultivation there. Through him, I connected with a supplier and purchased 500 seedlings at Taka 100 each. This is my first attempt at cultivating tulips. The yellow ones bloomed just 13 days after planting."
"Tulips on the remaining plants will bloom within the next 10 days. I hope to sell them during the upcoming Spring Festival and Valentine's Day," he added.
Hasinur invested Taka 50,000 to purchase the seedlings, while additional expenses for bamboo, fencing, polythene, and accessories totaled Taka 25,000.
He has already engaged two employees to look after the tulip garden.
"If I become successful this year, I will plant tulips on five acres of land in the days to come," said Hasinur.
To support the delicate flowers, sunlight is controlled using polythene sheets and small-mesh nets.
Sunrise, Antarctica White, La Bella Red, Strong Gold, and Milkshake (light pink) types of tulip, will bloom on his land this year.
Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Mahabub Rahman said, "We inspected the tulip garden and provided necessary suggestions to the young entrepreneur Hasinur."
Upazila Agriculture Officer Nayan Kumar Shaha stated that though there are around 150 tulip varieties worldwide, five types are currently being cultivated in Dinajpur.
"Hasinur has proven that tulips can be successfully grown in this district, and his success has amazed us," he added.
