RANGPUR, Sept 21, 2025 (BSS) - Tender plants of Transplanted Aman rice are
growing superbly following recent rainfalls predicting an excellent production of the crop in Rangpur Agricultural Region this season.
Officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said transplantation of Aman rice seedling was already completed last week, exceeding the fixed farming target of the crop by 0.17 percent in all five districts of the region.
Despite inadequate rainfalls during July and August last, farmers with assistance of the DAE and other agriculture-related organisations completed transplantation of Aman rice seedling timely mostly using irrigated water to crop fields.
"However, the frequent rainfalls during August and September worked as a tonic for growing Aman rice plants," Acting Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur agricultural region Krishibid Md Sirajul Islam.
"The farmers operated their irrigation pumps like deep and shallow tube wells, low lift and other pumps for supplementary irrigation to Aman crop lands in the region during transplantation of Aman rice seedlings this season," Islam said.
At the same time, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA), BADC and Teesta Barrage Project authorities provided supplementary irrigation to make
the Aman rice farming programme a success.
Of the growing Aman rice plants, 37.58 percent fields are in tillering, 38.65 percent in panicle initiation, 18.17 percent in booting, 3.69 percent in flowering, 1.36 percent in milking, 0.36 percent in dough, 0.16 percent in ripening stages and 0.03 percent has already been harvested.
"Farmers have engaged their all-out efforts in nursing their growing Aman rice plants, cleaning weeds and applying necessary pesticides on vast tracts of crop lands that have already worn an eye-catching look," he added.
According to the DAE officials, farmers have finally transplanted Aman rice seedlings on 6,21,505 hectares of land, 100.17 percent of the targeted land area for cultivation of the crop in the region this season.
Earlier, the DAE had fixed a target of producing 20,10,505 tonnes of clean Aman rice (30,15,757 tonnes in terms of paddy) from 6,20,430 hectares of land for all five districts in the region this season.
The interim government through the DAE distributed high-quality Aman rice seeds and fertilisers among small and marginal farmers as incentives to assist them in cultivating the crop smoothly.
Besides, steps had been taken to prepare the seedbeds for late varieties of Aman rice in highlands and floating seedbeds in low-lying areas so that there was no shortage of seedlings due to floods, if any in August and September.
The field-level agricultural officers have been providing all necessary support and latest technology to farmers to ensure successful cultivation of Aman rice in this region," Islam added.
Talking to BSS, a number of farmers of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur agricultural region said tender Aman rice plants were growing superbly.
Ariful Haque Batul, a farmer from Najirdigar village in Rangpur Sadar, said that due to frequent rainfall, the Aman rice plants growing on his seven acres of land will not require supplementary irrigation.
"Aman rice plants are growing superbly following recent rainfalls and the
blankets of fields have worn an eye-catching greenish look predicting a
bumper production of the major cereal crop this season," he hoped.
