CHANDPUR, May 10, 2026 (BSS)- Boro paddy has witnessed a bumper yield under two irrigation projects, Meghna-Dhangoda and Chandpur Irrigation Project, in the district.
Under the projects, paddy cultivation of a total 16,062 hectares of land were carried out this year.
Harvesting has already been completed on 22 to 55 percent of the cultivated land under the two projects.
According to the District Agriculture Office, Boro cultivation was carried out on 10,862 hectares of land in Sadar, Faridganj and Haimchar upazilas under the Chandpur Irrigation Project. More than half of the paddy from those lands has already been harvested, with around 55 percent harvested as of May 10.
Under the Meghna-Dhanagoda Irrigation Project in Matlab Uttar upazila, Boro cultivation was carried out on 5,200 hectares of land. Around 25 percent of the paddy under the project has been harvested so far.
Farmer Aminul Islam, 55, of South Deichar village in Faridganj upazila said he cultivated Boro on two plots totaling 1 acre and 20 decimals this year. Harvesting of his paddy is almost complete and the yield has been good.
Another farmer of the same village, Taher Sardar, 48, expressing satisfaction over the production, said he cultivated Boro on 40 decimals of land and harvested eight maunds of paddy from 10 decimals.
He said adequate supply of irrigation water, fertilizer and electricity contributed to the good yield this year.
Farmer Abed Hossain, 60, of Fatepur area in Matlab Uttar upazila under the Meghna-Dhanagoda Irrigation Project said he cultivated Boro. “The absence of water shortage this year ensured good production,” he said.
Farmer Jahangir Alam, 45, of Farazikandi area said he cultivated paddy on four kanis of land and received better production this year compared to previous years.
He said some crops were damaged by hailstorms caused by a sudden nor’wester a few days ago.
Faridganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Kallol Kishore Sarkar told BSS that the production target under the Chandpur Irrigation Project has been achieved due to good yield.
As of Sunday, 55 percent of the paddy under the project has been harvested.
“If weather conditions remain favorable, farmers will be able to complete harvesting on time,” he said.
This year the agriculture department is expecting 44,158.20 metric tonnes of rice production from 10,150 hectares of land under the irrigation project this year.
Matlab Uttar Upazila Agriculture Officer Faisal Mohammad Ali said farmers received irrigation water earlier this year compared to previous seasons, resulting in better Boro cultivation.
“The achievement in Boro cultivation this season has exceeded the target,” he added.
Executive Engineer (Mechanical) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board in Chandpur Md. Ruhul Amin, who is responsible for maintenance of the water pumps under the two projects marked the pump houses as the main driving force of the irrigation system.
“These pump houses are 45 years old and have been kept operational through repairs. We have continued our efforts to ensure timely water supply to farmers and this effort will continue in the future as well,” he added.
