SUNAMGANJ, June 21, 2026 (BSS) - The popular pineapples grown on the hills of Hasaura are bringing financial success to hundreds of local farmers.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the high-quality, juicy and fiberless variety of pineapples is currently being cultivated across 30 hectares of hilly terrain in Hasaura and neighboring villages under Rangarchar union.
Talking to BSS, local growers Nitai Chandra Das and Islam Uddin said the pineapples are grown completely naturally without any chemical fertilizers, making them highly sought-after across the country. Buyers and traders are now flocking directly to the orchards to purchase the fruit.
Local union parishad chairmen Abdul Hai and Amirul Haque noted that vast tracts of fallow hillocks in the area could be brought under pineapple cultivation if the government provides incentives and modern preservation facilities to the farmers.
District Agriculture Officer Omar Faruk told BSS that the unique sweetness of the Hasaura pineapple has created a growing domestic market, with strong prospects for international export.
Sunamganj District Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Minhajur Rahman told BSS that the local administration will take all necessary initiatives to list the distinct Hasaura pineapple as a Geographically Indicated (GI) product to protect its unique identity and expand its commercial reach.
