LONDON, June 13, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today said if all preparations are completed, the next general elections could be held in the week before the start of the holy month Ramadan in February, 2026.

He made the remark during a meeting with BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at a London hotel this morning.

BNP acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman met visiting Chief Adviser Prof Yunus in London. Their meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere, said a joint statement made by the Chief Adviser and the acting BNP Chairman following their meeting.

Tarique Rahman proposed to the Chief Adviser to arrange the polls before the next Ramadan.

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also thinks that it would be better if the election is held during that time, the statement read.

Prof Yunus said he has already announced that the polls would be held in the first half of April next year (2026).

"If all preparations are completed, the polls could be organised in the week before the start of Ramadan in 2026. In that case, it will be necessary to achieve sufficient progress on reforms and trials by that time," he said.

Tarique Rahman welcomed this position of the Chief Adviser and thanked him on behalf of the party.

Prof Yunus also thanked Tarique Rahman for the fruitful discussion.
