Tk 200cr 'Haribhanga' mango businesses likely in Rangpur

RANGPUR, July 4, 2025 (BSS) – As the harvesting of the fibreless, fleshy and highly tasty ‘Haribhanga’ mango continues in full swing now, a Taka 200 crore business of this indigenous variety mango is expected in Rangpur district alone.
 
Officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) predicted an excellent output of ‘Haribhanga’ mango in Rangpur and adjoining districts this year. 
 
Farmers are getting excellent yields of big and moderate-sized ‘Haribhanga’ mangoes and good prices in local markets.
 
Farmers have cultivated ‘Haribhanga’ mango on about 2,600 hectares of land in all five districts of Rangpur agricultural region and adjoining areas, including on 1,930 hectares of land in Rangpur district alone, this year.
 
“During the last season, farmers produced 38,508 tonnes of 'Haribhanga' mango from their orchards in 2,556 hectares of land in the region,” said Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur region Md Shafikul Islam.
 
Of them, they produced 29,772 tonnes of 'Haribhanga' mango from orchards on 1,910 hectares of land in Rangpur district alone.
 
'Haribhanga' mango has been officially recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Rangpur. The recognition has created a huge demand for it locally and abroad. 
 
"The agriculture-based rural economy of Rangpur is thriving with the increased cultivation of 'Haribhanga' mango, which has already made hundreds of farmers self-reliant," he mentioned.
 
Talking to BSS, Mithapukur Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Saiful Abedin said that this time 'Haribhanga' mangoes have been cultivated in the orchards and homesteads on 1,300 hectares of land in Mithapukur upazila alone of Rangpur district. 
 
“The production target of 'Haribhanga' mango has been fixed at 26,000 metric tonnes worth about Taka 155 crore for Mithapukur upazila alone,” he said.
 
Deputy Director of the DAE for Rangpur agriculturist Md Sirajul Islam said that this season, Rangpur district is expected to produce 30,000 tonnes of 'Haribhanga' mangoes worth Taka 200 crore at the farmer level.
 
Commercial basis cultivation of ‘Haribhanga’ mango is expanding every year and bringing self-reliance to hundreds of farmers. The production and trade of 'Haribhanga' mangoes will be excellent this season.  
 
Despite huge sales of ‘Haribhanga’ mango in local markets, many youth have become engaged in online marketing to reach the tasty fruit to people across the country through courier services.
 
Sarker Manjurul Mannan, a young online mango supplier, said he has been taking orders online and delivering ‘Haribhanga’ mango to customers of different parts across the country. 
 
“I have been receiving an increasing number of orders everyday for supplying ‘Haribhanga’ mango,” he said.
    
Market sources said the per kg price of ‘Haribhanga’ mango currently remains between Taka 50 and 60 and the price is rising every day onward as harvesting of the mango will end by this month end.
 
"The price of 'Haribhanga' mango might go up to 300 to 450 per kg at the end of the harvesting season," said fruit trader at Rangpur City Bazar Mohammad Babu Mia today.
  
Mango farmer Shahjahan Mia from Tekani village of Khoragachh union in Mithapukur upazila said he has been cultivating ‘Haribhanga’ mango on an orchard since 2012 and is reaping better profits every year.
 
Abdus Salam, a farmer from Akhirarhat village in the same upazila, said that since 1992, he has changed his fortune by cultivating 'Haribhanga' mangoes and has made a great contribution to expanding its cultivation in the Rangpur agricultural region.
