CHATTOGRAM, Oct 1, 2025 (BSS) - The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) will enforce its revised tariff structure from midnight of October 14, after deferring its earlier implementation for one month.

CPA Secretary Md. Omar Faruk confirmed the matter today, saying the decision follows approval from higher authorities.

"Earlier, the CPA suspended collection of the new tariff for a month, but it will now come into effect from midnight of October 14," he said.

On September 14, CPA issued a circular announcing the new tariff, effective from September 15, and began collecting charges accordingly before suspending them.

The port authority has argued that the revision, the first in 40 years, was long overdue to reflect changing trade dynamics and the expansion of port services.

A fresh circular signed by Md. Abdus Shakur, Chief Officer of the Finance and Accounting Department, confirmed today that all ships, containers, and cargo arriving at Chattogram Port after October 14 midnight will be subject to the new rates.

Clearing and forwarding (C&F) agents, shipping agents, and other port users will be required to pay the revised charges.

Shipping agents have also been instructed to secure letters of discharge for vessels, ensuring sufficient funds are deposited in designated bank accounts to cover the increased costs.

Currently, fees are collected across 52 sectors, but the new tariff will directly affect 23 of them.

As per the gazette, port dues, tolls, and charges will be based on the dollar exchange rate, fixed at Tk 122 per US dollar. Any fluctuation in the exchange rate will automatically adjust the charges.

Fees for a 20-foot container will increase to Tk 16,243 from Tk 11,849, marking a 37 percent hike.

Import containers will cost an additional Tk 5,720, while export containers will rise by Tk 3,045.

An extra charge of about Tk 3,000 will also apply to each container movement, resulting in an overall increase of 25 to 41 percent in container transportation charges.
