Awami League leader arrested for attack, vandalism in Gangachara

RANGPUR, Jan 24, 2025 (BSS) – Police arrested Awami League leader Liaqat Ali from Matlab Bazar in Gangachara upazila here today in a case of attack on the anti-discrimination student movement and vandalism of the upazila BNP office. 
 
Arrested Liaqat Ali is the Vice-President of Gangachara upazila Awami League and chairman of the Gajoghontha union parishad in the upazial of the district.
 
“We arrested him as an accused in a case filed by Abdullah Al Babu, joint convener of the Upazila Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal with Gangachara model police station in November 18 last on charges of vandalism, looting and arson at the Gangachara upazila BNP office on July 19,” said Inspector of Police (Investigation) of Gangachara model police station Md Asaduzzaman this evening.
 
Former Member of Parliament from Rangpur-1 constituency and expelled Jatiya Party Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga, former Member of Parliament Asaduzzaman Bablu, former Upazila Parishad Chairman and Upazila Awami League President Ruhul Amin, its General Secretary Md Azizul Islam, upazila Awami League publicity and publication secretary Abdul Matin Ovi, Gajoghontha union parishad chairman Liaqat Ali, Gangachara Sadar union parishad chairman Mazharul Islam Lebu, Mornea union parishad chairman Zillur Rahman, Jubo League leader Ataur Rahman, and leaders, activists and supporters of the 14-party grand alliance, Awami League, Jubo League, banned Chhatra League, Swechchhasebak League and allied organisations were accused in that case. 
 
In addition, 250-260 unidentified people were accused in the case. They are also accused of robbery, looting and harassment. 
 
“We produced the arrested person before a Rangpur court from where he was sent to the jail hajat today,” Inspector of Police Asaduzzaman told BSS.
