Value chain in dairy sector needed for making farmers benefited

KHULNA, Jan 25, 2025 (BSS)-  Speakers at a workshop here today unanimously mentioned that successful promotion of value chain can be the crucial means of making the grassroots farmers benefitted.

Many of the dairy farmers left their business after facing losses due to lack of value chain. There is a need for substantial promotion of the value chain for the sector to be sustainable and productive.

Administrative officials and experts came up with the observation while addressing the workshop titled "Green Dairy Partnership in Bangladesh: Creating a Sustainable and Productive Dairy Value Chain Model in Southwest Bangladesh".

Solidaridad Network Asia organized the project inception workshop at the office conference hall of Divisional Commissioner in the city.

Divisional Commissioner Froj Sarker addressed the workshop as chief guest with Selim Reza Hasan, country manager, Solidaridad Network Asia, in the chair.

Additional Commissioner Abu Sayeed Muhammad Monjur Alam and Divisional Director of the Department of Livestock Services Dr Nurullaha also spoke.

The meeting was told that the “Green Dairy Partnership in Bangladesh – creating a sustainable and productive dairy value chain model in Southwest Bangladesh” will be implemented with financial support of Danida Green Business Partnership (DGBP) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

 The project is pioneering a green, sustainable, and commercially viable dairy business, targeting 30 percent reduction in Greenhouse Emission and 30 percent increase in income for 10,000 farmer households

Additionally, the five-year project has the ambition to ensure that 80 percent of the targeted farmers are women.
 
Subsequently, the project will streamline milk collection and processing in Southwest Bangladesh, while introducing more sustainably produced dairy products in the market.

Selim Reza Hasan said: "The prosperity of Bangladesh demands safe and sustainable food. The ‘Green Dairy Partnership project’ is developing a business case for the farmers and the private sector for production and supply of quality milk, which would be carbon neutral."
