4-day festival ahead of Baishabi begins in Khagrachhari

KHAGRACHHARI, April 5, 2025 (BSS) - Baishabi, a major social festival of the 
minority ethnic peoples living in Chattogram Hill Tracts, will begin from 
April 12. 

Ahead of the festival, a joyous atmosphere is prevailing in the entire CHT 
region.

Traditional sports and cultural performances are being held in various 
neighborhoods.

On the eve of Baishabi, a four-day festival has begun at Khagrachhari Minor 
Ethnic Group Cultural Institute.
 
Khagrachhari Hill District Council Chairman Jiruna Tripura inaugurated the 
Baishabi fair by cutting the ribbon on Saturday afternoon.

On the first day of the festival, Marma water games (Jalkeli), Tripura Garya 
dance and various traditional performances of Chakmas were presented. 

Besides, the fair premises became a hub for the traditional "Komar Tant" and 
various cultural performances of the hill people.

The discussion was chaired by the rector of the Cultural Institute of 
Minority Ethnic Groups Nyohla Mong and the chief guest was the District 
Council Chairman Jiruna Tripura. 

Khagrachhari Minority Ethnic Group Institute Director Nyohla Mong said this 
fair is being organised to preserve the traditions of the minor ethnic groups 
of the hills. 

The fair includes dances of different ethnic groups, children's drawing 
competitions, being weaving (Komar Tat) competitions, Tripura's Garaya dance, 
Marma water games, and various games. Additionally, various types of 
traditional hill people's food are available in the fair shops. 

At the fair premises, there are several cultural programmes every day from 
5pm to 8 pm.

This fair will be enjoyable, he hoped. In addition, various games including 
Nader Khel, Ghila Khel, Bash Kharom Dar are being organized in various 
villages of the district to mark the festival.

On the other hand, a 15-day Baishabi Fair is being held in the New Zealand 
area, the heart of Khagrachhari city, under the initiative of the 
Khagrachhari Baishabi Celebration Committee.
