BANDARBAN, April 12, 2025 (BSS) - The Chakma and Tanchangya communities here in the district marked the beginning of their traditional three-day Biju-Bisu festival early this morning with floral offerings in the Sangu River.
At around 7:00am, people of all ages-from children to the elderly-gathered on the riverbank near the district town, dressed in vibrant traditional attire.
Carrying flowers placed on banana leaves, they offered them to the river in honor of Jolbondhu Mother Ganga, praying for peace and prosperity in the coming years.
"We came early in the morning to offer flowers to Mother Ganga," said Priyanta Tanchangya, one of the participants.
Another devotee, Sumon Tanchangya, said, "Today is Biju, tomorrow is Bisu, and on Monday we will celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year."
Najib Tanchangya, member secretary of the Bisu Festival Celebration Committee, told journalists, "As in previous years, we are observing Phool Biju and Phool Bisu with floral offerings in the river and prayers for a peaceful life ahead."
Following the floral ceremony, traditional games such as Ghila Khela and cultural performances were held in the evening.
Najib said various sweet cakes and traditional delicacies will be shared among the community members to celebrate the Bengali New Year.
Special prayers will be held at all Buddhist temples on Monday evening, seeking peace and progress for the entire nation.
Among the 11 ethnic communities living in the hill districts of Bandarban, Rangamati, and Khagrachhari-including the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Tanchangya, Mro, Khumi, and Khiyang-the Baisabi festival remains the most significant cultural celebration.
