CUMILLA, April 12, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested a man in connection with an extortion attempt and a subsequent attack on a police station in the Companiganj area of Muradnagar upazila.

The arrestee, Haji Idris, 50, is a resident of Gunjor village in Nobipur Purbo union under Muradnagar upazila, confirmed Muradnagar Police Station officer-in-charge Jahidur Rahman.

Police said activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement intervened during an alleged public extortion attempt in the Companiganj area on March 24.

In response, a group reportedly led by Abul Kalam attacked the student activists. Police arrived at the scene and arrested Abul Kalam.

However, as he was being taken to the police station, another group launched an attack on the station in an attempt to forcibly free him.

In this regard, two separate cases were filed-one by student leader Abu Faisal and another by police.

OC Jahidur Rahman said that Idris is the 11th accused in one of the cases.

He added that operations are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects.
