MUNSHIGANJ, April 14, 2025(BSS) - People from all walks of life in the district have welcomed the interim government's decision to set up a medical college here.

They said it will alleviate their sufferings as they will not need to rush to Dhaka for better treatment once the government medical college is established.

They believe medical services near their doors will also improve existing educational, social and cultural landscape of the district.

However, the decision to set up a medical college was taken at a meeting on April 7, attended by home adviser lieutenant general (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, public works and housing adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, cultural affairs adviser Mostafa Sarwar Farooki, Bangladesh navy chief Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan and officials concerned.

Following the meeting, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the medical college will be established within shortest possible time considering long-cherished desire and demand of people in Munshiganj.

Munshiganj civil surgeon Md Manjurul Alam said works for establishing the medical college will begin within few months by demolishing the old academic building of 250-bedded hospital.

People will avail facilities of all kinds of treatments round the clock at the hospital, he said.

The medical college will open new doors to the people in the district, Munshiganj Bar Association president Advocate Md Zakaria Molla told BSS.

He thanked the interim government for the 'revolutionary' decision.

High school teacher Md Mahbubur Rahman said, "We won't need to go to Dhaka anymore for treatment."

He believes the medical college will not only treat patients, but also change the current social and educational landscape in the district.

Md Anwar Hossain, who came to Munshiganj Sadar Hospital from remote Char Kewa area, told this correspondent, "We are happy with the news that a medical college would be set up here. Thousands of people will be benefitted by the hospital."
