BARGUNA, June 14, 2025 (BSS) - Fishermen from the district are returning with the much-anticipated Hilsa fish after casting their nets in the estuary of the Bay of Bengal.

Following the end of a 58-day fishing ban, the Patharghata Fish Landing Center has regained its vitality.

The docks are now bustling with Hilsa and various other sea fishes, along with the busy activities of fishermen, labourers, and fish traders.

The Hilsa season in the Bay of Bengal is going on, and the abundance of this silver fish has brought joy to fishermen, traders, and fish merchants.

According to the Fish Landing Center’s data, as of Friday night, a total of 20,817 kilograms of fish had arrived at the center, including 9,305 kilograms of Hilsa. The remaining 11,512 kilograms were other types of sea fish.

Local traders said that Hilsa weighing one kilogram is being sold at Tk 100,000 per maund, while 900-gram Hilsa at Tk 89,000–90,000, Hilsa weighing 600–700 grams at Tk 60,000–64,000, and 500-gram Hilsa is being sold at Tk 42,000–46,000 per maund.

Biplob Kumar Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Patharghata Fish Landing Center said that the volume of fish in just one day indicates a strong return of fish in the sea.

However, he stressed on ensuring proper preservation, quick marketing, and transportation facilities, otherwise, a large portion of the fish may go to waste.

District Fisheries Officer Mohsin said that this year, the fishing ban was successfully enforced in coordination with India as part of a fish conservation campaign. The result is now evident, with a noticeable increase in sea fishes, especially Hilsa, he added.

Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, President of the District Trawler Owners’ Association, noted that long-term planning is essential to sustain this success.

Easy access to ice, fuel, and necessary supplies must be ensured for fishermen, alongside taking effective measures to regulate the market so that consumers can buy Hilsa at an affordable price, he added.
