KHULNA, June 14, 2025 (BSS) - Police today arrested local Awami League (AL) leader Liaquat Ali from Fulbarigate area of Khulna city.

Liaquat Ali, vice president of the Khulna City Unit Awami League and former president of Khan Jahan Ali Thana Unit, was detained by locals around 12:30 pm near Fulbarigate Bazaar intersection.

Eyewitnesses and police said that angry local residents detained him and assaulted before handing over to law enforcers.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khan Jahan Ali Police Station Kabir Hossain confirmed the arrest, stating that Liaquat Ali was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital's prison cell.

According to police, multiple cases had been filed against him at Digholia, Daulatpur, Khan Jahan Ali and Savar police stations after August 5, 2024.

He was earlier arrested on May 13 while seeking bail, a day after the Awami League's political activities were banned, but was released on bail shortly before Eid.

Locals allege that Liaquat Ali unlawfully held the presidency of the Fulbarigate Market Traders' Association during the AL's tenure, ignoring repeated calls for fresh elections by both regular traders and party supporters.

"He had been in hiding for a long time. We were informed by local residents around 1:00 pm and recovered him from the spot. He will be shown arrested following his treatment," OC Kabir Hossain added.
