Former BCL vice-president arrested in Rangpur

RANGPUR, June 23, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested former vice-president of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) central committee Monwarul Islam Masud, in a case of attempted murder and attack on anti-discrimination student movement. 
 
"Masud was arrested from the Keramatia Jame Mosque area in Rangpur city around 11 pm on Sunday, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Md Ataur Rahman told BSS this afternoon.

Monwarul Islam Masud, son of Md Shahidul Islam is a resident of Jagjiban village in ward 9 of Annnodanagar union under Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur. 

Masud was arrested in a case filed against him for attacking an anti-discrimination student movement and attempting to kill Joynal Abedin Bappi and Mamunur Rashid.
 
Arrested Masud was also an assistant secretary of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, a former organizing secretary of Dhaka University BCL and Rangpur district Awami League convening committee member.
 
The OC said that Masud, went into hiding after the Awami League regime fell in mass uprising on August 5 last year. 
 
"After completing the legal process, we produced Masud before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court, from where he was sent to jail this afternoon," the OC added.
